I am looking for a switch with a built in (circuit protecting) fuse that fits in a standard outlet box. The purpose is to be able to put a 20 amp. breaker back on a primarily 12 gauge circuit that has a few 14 gauge switched legs for lighting.

On this or a similar forum, someone mentioned using a fused switch on a 240 volt circuit to protect an appliance given that the circuit itself was protected at a higher current. I can't seem to find such fused switches at my local Home Depot.

The switch that KB posted can be found at Home Depot at the fuse section. It's pretty nifty. I've used them on several occasions. But for 240 V applications, I'd use a regular fused safety switch, or fused A/C disconnect.

That would be nifty, but not readily available. I'd use them if they had them everywhere.

I am going to guess that you are having a problem with the breaker tripping, that is why you want to change it.
Instead of installing the fused switch add the proper new circuit for your high draw equipment that is tripping the circuit.

Another application would be to protect an electric motor. The latest issue of Fine Homebuilding magazine did a tool review of Portable Thickness Planers where the reviewer points out that at least one model does not have an internal circuit breaker so that:

it could burn up if overloaded
