I have a electronic device that had a ribbon cable that goes from the base to the lid. Over time, the ribbon cable split near the hinge area. Im going to try and fix this by soldering a new cable, but I dont know where to find a cable like this. It looks similar to a computer ide cable, but the wires are spaced further apart. Total of 9 wires.

Ribbon imprint states: 06(m) VW-1 105 deg C 300V 26AWG 2651

I admit I do not know the answer but would recommend someone like Crutchfield, or Newark Electronics. Just an opinion. Thanks, David

It's just a flat ribbon cable so maybe a local electronics/computer place or a Radio Shack

Its not really a PC part but it is soldered to a circuit board. I will check those sites you posted. Thanks.

Do not try to repair the ribbon cable. Crazy! Contact the manufacturer of whatever your device is and get the one you need. Unless the plugs except pins, you are not going to get this soldered.

Where I live, we have a 'factory surplus' store, where they sell discontinued product!
They have reels of ribbon cable on hand and you can buy whatever length you want!
If you have any stores of this nature in your area, perhaps you can find something suitable, there!

What J.V. may have been referring to is that the cable in question unless it is from a very popular device may not be available.

By that I mean that the manufacturer of your device most likely did not buy the cable as pictured from another source but instead made up the cable internally from a large roll. Soldered ribbon cable is rare in that most ribbon cable I'm familiar with is on .05"' centers with IDC connectors. Manufacturers don't like to solder things when they can use mechanical connections.

diy, measure the conductor spacing to see if it comes out in an even metric number.(e.g. a 6mm spacing would be 0.236")
If so this is probably from an off shore manufacturer who may no longer be using soldered ribbon cables.

All speculation here, as you have not said where the cable is used.

There is no reason it has to be a ribbon cable like that. It could be a round cable or idividual wires. As long as the insulation, voltage and gauge are the same you are good. Make sure it flexes as needed. You could even use the existing cable and just a single wire to replace the one or two that are damaged.
I have seen cable similar to that inside desktop calculators from the keyboard to the main PCB.

Thanks everyone for the input.

I went to 3 local electronic part shops today, including Radio Shack. None of them sold the ribbon cable. I contacted the manufacturer of the device and they know it’s a known issue. They offered to sell me a new pcb - ribbon - pcb for $25. Im going to go that route since I cant find the cable locally and online stores sell it in bulk. Plus its never fun soldering such small wires

BTW, this is the device I am talking about. If you look at the hinge, the cable actually goes from the base of the unit to the lid.

Thats what I figured. Why waste your time, when you just fixed your problem for $25.00. :thumbsup:
I just don't get people that think they have to fix everything. IMHO. No disrespect meant to anyone.
