One of our hoses finally gave up the ghost. So I went on Amazon to check out ordering a new one. I was surprised to find that almost all of them are described as "expandable". The description says that they expand to up to 3x their "resting length" when the water is turned on.

One of them said if that hose does not expand, to make sure that the faucet is turned all the way on. They all come with a spray nozzle.

Do these work? Do they only work if the spray nozzle is attached so that pressure builds up in the hose? If I don't want the nozzle, will the hose be one third the length?

Total waste of time buy one!
Read right on the packaging, "Do not leave stored in direct sunlight".
The only one I've seen last more then a year is the Stainless Steel braided one and the size is so small there's very little flow.
Willing to unhook it every time and leave it stored out of the sun?

will not last at all.

I have purchased more than a dozen of them because they are SO USEFUL when they do work. You can get a 15' one and it expands to 45'. It contracts when done and you don't need to coil them up on the wall like a regular hose.

But they break. It's basically some soft plastic material that breaks easy under pressure after a while. One order I had 4 and one of them broke in 5 minutes. I have not had one last more than 2 months. Yes two months is the maximum I have gotten out of one before they burst. Doesn't matter if you hide them behind your shrubs, or directly exposed to sun, doesn't matter if you leave them on the ground, or hang them up on a hose rack. They break easy. I admit, I have not followed EXACT instructions, which is to remove them every time from the hose bib, drain all water out of it, and store them indoor coiled into the round box they came in.

Most of the time, the break is at the connections to the fittings on both ends. I know I have never "stretched" the hose to it's full length so that's not the problem.

Nonetheless, my wife likes it's convenience, and said if it can last two months, she is willing to buy a new one every two months. OK so I ordered a set of four, then another set of 4, and after some break immediately or after 1 day, she gave up.

and doesn't matter what they say in the ads, whether it's "strongest ever", or "newly improved", or "triple ply", or even "rupture resistant", they all break. Unless you get those that are like a shower hose in stainless, but then those are not expandable, their main thing is they do not kink or knot easy.

There's a bunch of different ones of these things. Some are total junk and don't even make it the summer (which up here is pretty darn short.) Other's are not too bad - the one my folks got to clean their patio down in Nevada has lasted forever and is good quality.

Unfortunately I don't know which one they got and they can't remember.

The junk one we had bought was a seen on tv thing my husband had ordered, but he doesn't remember which one of them it was lol

We got a new one to try last year, we had found it at Walmart in the fall. Have to see how it works, but I didn't find a manufacturer name on the box or anything so that doesn't help you much in the quest to find an okay one, sorry.

What ever you buy, look for made in America, if available. My mind starts thinking all of the poor products that keep failing are contributing to the trade deficit which may not be the case, but try.

I had one and loved it, mostly because it was so easy to store. But it does need to have a nozzle on it to expand to it's full length.
Thanks for this recommendation. I bought one and it works great. We've had it now for over a year and zero problems.

We bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CN8KMZJ/.

It's super light and almost coils itself back up. I'll probably never buy a regular "hard shell" garnen hose again.

I have two heavy black rubber hoses that have hung on the hanger on the outside of the house for the last 15 years and never had a problem but I disconnect them and remove the nozzles in the fall. I used to to lay them out flat every fall and drain the water out of them but I haven't done that for several years. The oldest daughter drug one of them out and thought it was longer than it was and jerked on it until it cracked at the bib. I put a new brass repair end on it.
