I saw someone else's post asking how to do the front of their house and they got some good replies. Thought I'd give it a shot.
I have an offer in on this house. The inside is awesome. 1939 build with tall ceilings, awesome woodwork and tons of character. However, the front of the house looks terrible.
The tiny porch ruins the front of the house. As you can see, someone tried to doll it up with some stonework, but it doesn't fit with the period of the home. Also, the rest of the houses on the street all have huge wrap around porches (Greenville, SC - Southern bungalows).
From what I can tell, the room to the left of the picture used to be a porch and was closed in. You can see the vertical boards covering the seams where they continued the siding. I initially though the roof peak to the left was added later on, but I looked at historical aerial images and, back to 1955, that peak was there. So, this house used to have a small side porch? I looked at the roof over the porch and it appears to be the same construction as the rest of the house due to the manner in which it was built and the amount of aging it shows.
While I would like to add a huge front porch, I don't really want to deal with the $10-15k price tag. I'm offering $85k for it and this house completely fixed up would probably max out around $150-165k. While I'm not flipping it, I expect to spend 3-5 years in it before I move on to my next house.
So, that being said, what do you think could be done with it?
