If you are going to tile your shower or tub walls and you have sheetrock, would you remove the sheetrock and install 7 /16", 1/2", or 5/8" concrete board? Or would you cover the sheetrock with 1/4", 7/16", or 1/2"?

Either remove the sheetrock and install 1/2 cbu or install Schluter Ditra on the sheetrock. Of course we can't see what you are doing, so pictures would help.

No pictures. I have a tub surround over sheetrock. I don't want to remove the tub surround until I have the concrete board here.

1/4" cbu for floors, 1/2" for walls.

I remove the wallboard and use the same thickness tile backer board. Then I can run the tile a little over onto the wallboard and not deal with a visible seam.
