The generator stops. Depending on how strong everything is, maybe the generator breaks.

It's the mechanical equivalent of hitting a brick with your lawnmower.

The generator probably has a breaker on it. The beaker will trip from overload.
It is not likely you will fry the generator.

I don't think it will work.

First the generator rating of 1800w is most likely the starting watts, not the running watts which is probably 1400w +or -. It is probably 120v only.

I would expect a real 2.5 hp motor on a submersible well pump to be around 2500w plus or minus, depending on effeciency. It would most likely require a 240v supply (230v rated motor)

Is the pump 120V or 240V?

2.5HP is only part of the equation, in fact, knowing the actual amperage would be much better.

I HIGHLY doubt a 2.5HP pump will be 120V. In fact I almost guaranty it's not. And an 1800 watt genset will almost certainly be 120V only.

I'm sorry. I had computer problems after I sent that and couldn't correctly answer your question. It's 240 volts.

A 2.5HP pump will use about 2.5kW (probably a bit more at full load), and a generator capable of twice the load will be satisfactory to handle the startup surge. You could probably run it on something smaller, but it will increase wear on the generator and you might run into problems overloading when the pump starts.

I'd be more worried 'bout burnin' up the Pump with a smaller gen-set,....
Electric motors don't like to be fed substandard power, they burn up,.....

A gen-set is at grade, 'n easy to change,...
Pullin' a pump outa the well ain't so easy,.....
