I could not locate the studs, not even with drilling holes from side to side and so decided to cut the dry wall to see the studs. I found this shaft like structure, made of thin tin behind the wall. What is this?
I have made 2 - 3 drill holes in this while I was attempting to locate studs by drilling

Sure looks live the HVAC duct work.
Should have been able to figure that out before cutting the drywall by looking above and below that area.

Funny stuff---

Next time--remember this---wood studs are usually spaced 16" apart (center of stud to center of stud--

When you locate what you think is a stud (using a stud finder) measure over 16" and see if another is there---If not--your stud finder might have located a pipe or duct work----

One of the reasons I have so many pics of my framing......and in some cases, with a tape measure next to studs.

Another way to find studs is if there are any electrical outlets on the wall there's 'usually' a stud just to the left of the outlet. From there you should be able to pull a 16" (sometimes 24") layout off that stud to find the others.

Yep......but you want to pull off the wall plate and make sure it's not a 'retrofit' box....as indicated by the screws in the corners.
