I'm having a problem with my clothes washer causing a leak somewhere a few feet away from the machine. I started looking behind some things and found this 2" iron pipe in the wall a few feet away which is not capped. I believe that this is where the water is coming from but not 100% sure.

In any case, does anyone know what this pipe is for and whether is should be open or closed. If is should be closed, how would I do that, it doesn't have any threads.

TIA

it might have been a vent or a drain for future use. they make rubber caps for pipes. try home depot or lowes. you could also extend it up higher then the washer and put an AAV (air admittance valve) on it in case its the vent for the washer.

Thanks for the info. The washer appears to have venting through the roof so I'll try the rubber cap and see what happens when I run some water through the washer drain.
