this is where my water enters the house?

what is this bag?
to me it looks a little like a bag of vermiculite? or something for moisture absorption? but I didn't think vermiculite absorbed moisture.
So what substance is probably in this bag, should I worry about it, and what purpose does it serve?

Everybody should know that that is a bag or old sock filled with rock salt. It was hung there because that pipe sweats in the summer.

I once got shot in the butt with rock salt by an old farmer we were skipping class and steeling his mango did'int hurt for a while then boy oh boy never stole a dang mango again. rock salt uh at least it wasn't a MOJO bag

It's probably there to filter out the minerals in the water supply, it sucks the bad minerals through the side of the copper into the bag so the water tastes good.
