Possible suggestions, just guesses; Too much sun and not enough water, over fertilized/not fertilized correctly, cutting with a dull blade.

Looks almost like the grass is being pulled out of the ground instead of cut.

Could be too much sun and not enough water I suppose... It shouldn't be the mower as I put a brand new blade on at the beginning of the season. Fertilizer has my gone down since early early spring.

Where do you live , what have been the day time temps and how much rain? Could be drought or could be a disease. As a general rule with lawns most cut lawns too short. A walk behind mower should be set at the second to highest or highest settings. It promotes healthier root systems, shades the dirt from the hot sun and crowds out weeds.
