Old friend calls me up wondering if I still crawl around on roofs.

Last season he had a new roof put on his house. He probably paid minimum 12,000 for the job. Heck of a nice guy, sad to see what they did too his roof.

Starts out showing me where the water is coming in the house, three spots that never leaked before. He tells me this just happened within the last week. He is hoping the gutters plugged up or something simple. I kept quiet at this point.

So I head up to the roof, takes me all of 30 seconds to see they totally ripped the guy off. I sit up there for about ten minutes wondering how I am going to break the news to him. I come back down and I felt like a doctor telling him his wife was not going to make it.
I told him I was not sure the agreement he had with them and he needs to call a roofing contractor out to do an inspection. He asks if he should call the roofers back, and I replied if you can get a hold of them. I hate being in that position. I just could not bring myself to tell him it is a disaster area up there.

You did well---I would had said something along the lines of," I see some issues up there that don't look like the best methods. I suggest you get a pro roofer out here to give you his opinion,"

Not to far off of what you did----before I knock another trades work, I try to get an opinion from a pro in that trade---
Bad situation----I hate seeing good people get clipped-----

a friend you care about ? be honest and tell him. sometimes the truth hurts. but in the end, it is what is best.

oh. and you tell us this story and not even a description of what was wrong, let along a pic ?

Really? I'd say man up and tell him he got bush-whacked. Telling someone that they had a bad roof job is bringing you so much heartache?

I was thinking the same thing. No details or photos on what he thought was the issue.

I'd say this is how you "man up" ^^^

It takes more of an effort to be considerate of others then is does to just be delighted to blurt out bad news.

Because the op is not a roofing pro, he would be remiss in criticizing the roof job. Plus, the pro roofer gets to be the one to do it as well as suggest the repair

I'd take the friend on the roof and say this is "effed up", this is "effed up" and that is "effed up" all in about 30 seconds. But thats me.

You have a point too.. Why prolong the pain when the band-aid needs to get ripped off regardless.

In my industry its against the code of ethics to slam another registrants work or character. Big trouble and monetary fines too.

In this particular instance we have to keep the title of the post in mind

First off, I will never bring someone on a roof ever again, it took me two hours to get this lady off her roof one time, never again. I was wrapped in the middle of a serious legal case one time by basically giving a vague description of what I witnessed to a large business owner. I have also learned never comment on someones work without having them there, or having talked to them first. I really do not understand contracts, they are more complicated than I first understood them to be. I did not feel comfortable mentioning names, describing problems. Believe me, there was no need for photos. The whole job, which could not be seen from the ground, was just a complete disaster. The bid to fix the job would start with a complete tear off. Complete replacement of the gutters they crushed getting on and off the roof. I did give there number to a real pro roofer. I talked to him last night see if he was interested, he told me he has not had much work in over a year. Told me there are these "roofers" going around and undercutting him so bad it is not worth working.
