I am an AVID DIYer. And for some reason, unlike most DIYers, I love doing tile work.
The reason is that I can do so much with it.
I can make a tile floor look like it has a carpet in-lay. I can run a band of contrasting tile around the perimeter of the floor to accentuate the layout.
I can build up mouldings using different tile profiles, just like I would with wood mouldings. But they are much more permanent.
And all the different textures, shades and colors. Oh, I love walking into the tile store!!
But the first thing I do is ask for the clearance or bargain areas to see what they have. So I can build up my stash of pencils, and other trim pieces. And then there are the metallics, glass and stone pieces mounted onto a mesh backing for easy mounting.
Don't forget the medallions. And the handmade tiles with embellishments.
That is why I love tile. You can keep it as plain Jane as you want or you can put a bit of sparkle into Jane's life by tossing in a metallic tile here and there.
