Aw Yeah,like Scuba Dave said. Carriage bolts are used where you cant( or can't easily) get a tool on the back side of the fastener to hold against your tightening of the nut. The "rectangle" in the slot does the holding that would normally be done by wrench or pliers.

in wood applications, they are usually used in a tight tolerence round hole. as you tighten the nut, the square portion embeds itself into the wood, keeping the head end from spinning. They also sell special washers the have a square cut out and "teeth" on the outer edges ( like a t-nut). You hammer the washer over a hole, and the square shoulder sits in the square cut inner hole.
