one of these days, i am going to go up in my attic to do an inspection. i have never been up there when it is cold out. what issues should i be looking for ?
Dripping water, being able to see day light around any roof penatrations, fungus or mold, cracked rafters.
It should be almost as cold in that attic as the outside. If it's warm your loosing heat through the ceiling from not being air sealed, not enough venting, or not enough insulation. http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=home_sealing.hm_improvement_insulation_table
black areas in insulation will indicate air leakage around penetrations. take some spray foam and/or caulk up w/ you, if it's warm enough to apply it. otherwise, a notebook and pencil.
