I have been noticing some random water hammer noise every few hours. Never when running any water in the house. It will be completely silent in the house and I hear a loud bang always in the same spot (basement area)
I do have a water softener and did notice the noise began after it was installed.
Could there be air in the lines and how would I remove said air?
This happens randomly and maybe 3-4 times a day that I have noticed.

Do you have a pressure reducing valve by the water into the house? If so do you have a hot water expansion tank? Also check for loose piping.

you could have the installing company come out to inspect their work...maybe loose pipes,, etc...tell them of your noise since the install... regeneration of the tank may be causing the pipes to shake....

No pressure release valve. By loose piping do you mean the way its fastened to the structure or loose joints?

the way its fastened to the joist ...loose joints would be leaking...

Yes its all fastened to the joists. what would cause a random bang every couple of hours when we are not even using the water?
Is there a procedure to bleed all air out of the pluming lines?

I doubt if its air in the lines.....may be the regeneration of the tank..it does it thur the softener automatic ...maybe the valve is closing hard.. causing the banging..

just a shot in the dark, do you have any newer honeywell zone valves on your heating system?

Then I would question if it is even plumbing related .
