The lawn wasn't well maintained to begin with, so it has mostly wild weed grass rather than proper grass lawn.

But recently over the past few months, seems the soil is getting dug up in patches on the lawn. However, I've not noticed any critter's there nor have I seen any noticeable tunnel holes in the lawn (like what I've seen in school lawn grounds).

Any ideas how I might find out w/o resorting to using the wrong (critter) pest product trying to find out?

Around here ,skunks like to dig for grubs--they are nocturnal--any skunks in your neighborhood?

Skunks don't think so, maybe squirrels though, haven't seen squirrels around my home, but know they'r prevelant in the Bay Area California.

Looks like moles
Kill the grubs and cinch bugs and they move on

Pull on some areas of the lawn. If it pulls away easily check for grubs. If it is grubs it could be skunks or racoons. Control the grubs or live trap the skunks/racoons.
