what are you techniques for trimming drywall

lets say, you cut a piece of drywall but you need to adjust one side just a tiny bit (for sake of arguement lets say 1/4" or less)
what ways do you "trim" it down?

do you use a drywall planer or do you use a utility knife and just shave it down and keep fitting it up as you go
or do you do something else?

yup you can use a rasp or i take my knife and cut a V then cut down the V to what i need if you get what i mean.
try to not cut it so tight. a small crack is better than forcing it in
I usually take the knife and slice a bevel cut from the back--then another from the front and a third to remove the peak of gypsum---then a quick cleanup with the rasp---

to much removal with the rasp and you end up with a bunch of paper shreds that need cleaning up with the knife---
this is what i use, and it works very well, except for below. i just try to not need it.

oh'mike thats exactly what i do. i dont always my rasp with me. i normally dry fit a piece with my knife still in my hand/ handy so its quicker that way

Sometimes, I'll screw in the sheet with the mismatched cut overlapping the next sheet---then run my roto-zip along the seam to remove the excess.

It takes a different technique to cut out a section of only 1/4" - I think it's explained in Myron Ferguson's book. If not there, maybe finehomebuilding.com. Bottom line, a quarter inch is a lot to be rasping so I'd prefer to cut.
Any one know the best wall scanner for mesh wire plaster?
Thanks

If you are looking for a stud finder that can read through plaster and mesh? You are not going to find one--sorry---look for nails in the base moldings or drill holes and hope to hit a stud----
tap the wall with your hammer and listen for the solid sounding hit to find the stud.
