Wet vent vs. dry vent

Venting is something that for some reason I have a hard time wrapping my head around. Not sure why but it just isn't easy for me to understand. Seems pretty simple in theory but it always seems to confuse me.

First, what exactly is wet venting? Can you give some examples of wet venting? And is all wet venting illegal?

Does a toilet drain also need a vent?

If a toilet or sink or tub is within so many feet of the main stack does it still need a vent?

How far away from a P trap can the vent be?
