Hello all,

Came home Friday to a sound I've never heard, the well pump control box was making a sound like metal being drilled, that lasted for about a second and repeated about once a minute.

Turned off the power, got a new control box and replaced the cover. Turned on power, reset pressure switch and got pressure. Then a little while later (less than an hour) heard a similar noise from the new control box.

There was about 35 psi water pressure, but not enough to cycle the pressure switch off. Turned off power at the breaker. Left it off except when needing to refill toilets.

Yesterday, needed to take a quick shower and refill the toilets, so turned power on and reset pressure switch. Had enough pressure to take a shower, but it spit air a few times. Got tired of going back and forth between the breaker panel and the room with the water system so flipped the pressure switch to the off position instead of using the circuit breaker.

A few hours later, the next time I needed water for a few minutes, resetting the pressure switch did not get any pressure. And now the pressure switch hums when held in the reset position.

Things I've checked:

1) Pressure switch has power in, and when held in the closed position is providing power out.

2) Removed control box cover and checked resistances of wires to pump. They are in line with expected according to a post I found. R-Y: 18 ohms Y-B: 6 ohms R-B: 22 ohms.

3) Checked air pressure in tank, there is pressure.

Any ideas? It is a dug well with a 3' or so diameter concrete cover. Could move cover if it makes sense to pull up the pump at this point.

pull controller & test continuity between wires from pump motor
no continuity - pump has bought the farm...
didn't you say it was 20+ yrs old?

BTW average life of a water pump/motor is less than 10 yrs

Years old seems to be the standard measure but hours of operation would be more accurate. Then there is the factor of what is it pumping with the water. A little sand, a lot of sand or pure aquifer water.:smile:

Sand usually drops out in the hot water tank as a sediment but if the screens of the laundry unit hoses plug with a strange looking substance it can be from fiberglass impellers that followed a bearing failure.

Sand usually drops out in the hot water tank as a sediment but if the screens of the laundry unit hoses plug with a strange looking substance it can be from fiberglass impellers that followed a bearing failure.
Senior is correct that hrs along with size of family, pump depth, (& also directly related to hrs) is size of pressure tank determining how often pump cycles... wild cards are bad foot/check valves, bad pressure switch/clogged sensor tube, debris/water quality, & lightening/power surges...

2 wire pumps have capacitors inside submerged motor & so when capacitor dies...pump has to be pulled & at the least motor replaced:vs_mad:

spin down separators can help keep debris out of pressure tank & heater - don't have to turn water off to blow out sediment either
