The smell originates from the closet. It is a constant smell that is distinctive to the room and amplifies when it rains.
Any ideas on what it may be?

Is the closet on an outside wall or have a bath or kitchen behind it (pipes or other leaks)? Sounds like you may have a mold or mildew problem inside the walls.

The sump pump is located in the closet (but is enclosed with a separate door). Thanks Mike for your help!

So it's either the seal on the sump lid or time to get new shoes.

I sealed the crap out of the sump pump lid and I keep my shoes in the living room. Also, the smell intensifies after it rains.
