Hi all,

I was just checking the packaging on TWR receptacles, and they're rated "for outdoor use only". I'm wondering if anyone knows why.

I installed them in my garage a while back because (a) the shutters seem like a good way to keep out sawdust, (b) I have a lot of windows and the UV protection seemed like .. not a bad thing, (c) although it's never wet in the garage, depending on what project I'm working on it could get a little damp, and so the extra corrosion resistance seems beneficial, and (d) they seem to have a higher retention tension than other consumer-grade receptacles.

I know it was my error not to read the mfr. specs before installing them and they should be removed.

That aside, I can't wrap my head around why they're good enough for outdoor use, but unsuitable for indoor. They just seem to be higher quality receptacles.

Thanks!

I believe that if it's rated TWR (both tamper resistant & weather resistant) it could be used indoors. At any rate, I think the Code allows them in Garages.

If it's listed WR only, then it wouldn't be tamper proof, which is required for indoors, per 406.11.

BTW: this is new to me, but that's not surprising, as most everything Code related is new to me :)

I don't think the code explicitly forbids the use of WR receptacles indoors (if it does, I can't find it), but you are required to follow all ratings for a product, which means the code implicitly forbids using them.
