Hi, I had significant water staining on unfinished cedar paneling inside my house from ice dams last winter. The cedar is more than likely 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. The stains are on the ceiling and walls. Not sure if white or red cedar.

I was thinking of ripping it out or burying it with more cedar. My kids suggested just white washing first, if that didn't work, then paint or stain. I know the water staining can not be sanded out. The roof above has been replaced with full ice barrier and new skylights.

Any thoughts??

I do like their idea, much less work and cost, and if I have to rip it out, I have to rip it out!!!

Thanks,

Bernie

Repairing the wall should have been covered by your insurance company as part of the repairs as part of the ice dam repairs. Probably too late for that. It certainly doesn't hurt to try and refinishing them first. The worst that go wrong is it doesn't work and you have to replace them. There are others on this forum that can better advice than I for this kind of work, so I will defer to them for specifics.

Oxalic acid based wood brighteners can be used to remove water stains on cedar. I don't know if would be practical to do inside, but I've used it on several occasions on exterior cedar for that purpose.

I usually apply the brightener then pressure wash at low pressure. It might also work to apply the brightener then scrub it with a soft brush.

Might be worth a shot before tearing it all out. I like this product, it's a mixture of oxalic and citric acids.
