Water Softener doesn't recognize water usage

I have a Ecowater water softener but lately it hasn't been recognizing water flowing through the unit. I have checked after a day of doing laundry and it says I only used 1 gallon as well as telling me that my average usage is only 3 gallons per day. I have watched the meter go from telling me 1 gpm to 0 when the faucet is still running. This has led to having hard water and it not knowing to regenerate automatically. It still uses salt when I tell it to regenerate so at least that part seems to be functioning. I don't know enough about how water softeners work to even know where to start troubleshooting the problem. Any help would be much appreciated.
