i have a water leak that i can't locate i have turned off all the valves and i have dug up the septic tank and can see a slow stream coming out of the house. I am stumped does anyone know what it could be?

With the exception of a toilet, any running water from a fixture should be easily seen. I have to ask, how did you discover a water leak? If you have a humidifier on your heating/AC unit, check there. This is one place that is basically forgotten when checking for leaks. Is the valve to your water meter shut off? Please keep us advised of things you have done.

We discovered it as the house is empty and the water bill was $60.00 we have used a little water but not that much. the water compnay told us that our lateral lines were awfully green and we should check if water was leaking into the tank. we shut off all the valves to the toilets,sinks and have no other water running other than the water going into the hot water tank.

Thanks for the info since that takes a lot of causes out of the equation. Is the T/P valve for the water heater tied into a drain line? Although this should not be done, I have seen it in the past. I would recheck all the toilets since supply valves can get clogged and allow water to pass through.

i will check the water heater t/p valve. my husband disconnected the water supply from the toilet. He said hedidn't see any water coming out of either one. we tried the dye in the tank and got no signs of leaks. thanks

Sorry it is such a slow process, but there are only a few items that could possibly have water running in them that would not be visible and are tied into the drain lines.

we check the t/p valve it is not conected to a drain. We disconnected all the lines to toilet and sinks nothing coming thru the shut off. Could it be leaking behind the valves and go int the drains.

If it isn't going through a fixture (sink, tub etc) it would need a hole in the drain pipe to get into it. Since the water is going through the meter, it pretty much means it is from one of the plumbing supply lines. Really concentrate on what appliances and fixtures use water and are not now disconnected. This is why I asked about a humidifier on the furnace earlier.
