Water in softener brine tank

People,

My water softener usually had in the past about 18"-20" of water in the tank ("dirty" water line is apparent) . Now it only has about 10", way below the salt level. Is something wrong with this?

Mine fluctuates between 10 -12 inches or so. Not sure if anything is wrong with yours or not.

There is a water treatment pro who frequents this forum. please wait for him to respond.
