Earlier today I smelled an electrical smell but couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from. A few minutes ago I heard a tripped breaker and it was the water heater breaker. It is a 6 year water heater and was made in january 2011 so it went 4 years past its date. The heater smells burnt. I just don't want to replace it and find out it was an electrical issue or something else. Do you think the water heater is the problem? Electrical problem? Could it be a part in the heater that went bad that I can replace? Trying to figure out what is my best plan of action.

Thanks so much for your time

Open up the hatches on the side and look for anything that seems burnt.
