I need some help figuring out what is wrong with our washing machine. Maytag Performance top loading machine. It is not old but it is not new. It was in the house when we bought it, so I'm not sure what the age is? Last night my husband put a load of clothes in and turned it on. This morning (probably 12 hrs. later) I went to unload it. The machine had filled up but had not begun to wash (the soap was still sitting on top of the clothes). The dial had moved. I turned the machine off and then back on and it made a humming noise and smelled like burning. Anyone know what is wrong (burned up the motor)? Am I looking at a new machine in my future?

I would check the belt, could be the motor is turning but slipping on the belt. Not sure about your model but most with most older maytag top load, the belt is located on the very bottom, underneath the machine. One belt runs both the pump and the agitator.

You will have to get the water out first!

Then tip the machine backwards far enough to inspect it. The front panel comes off with 2 screws on the front near the bottom, then hinge it out at the bottom and unhook the top clips

The older maytag top loads were about as bullet proof as you can get, I know of several that are more than 20 years old and going strong!

most likely the motor is bad, or a remote possibility that something is jamming the pump preventing it from turning and causing the belt to slip and burn .
