We are remodeling the laundry room which will include built ins over the washer and dryer as well as a countertop.

Currently the hot/cold/drain are all about 48 inches from the floor.

The top of the washer and dryer 40 inches from the floor.

My question is around the drainpipe, is there a minimum it can be from the top of the pipe (where you put the washer drain hose) to the floor?

I have read it is a minimum of 18" above the water line in the trap itself.

We are trying to lower all the connections so they are under the countertop in order to tile the wall above it.

The hot and cold are no problem, it is the trap/drain pipe length I want to make sure is right.

You will have to open the wall either way. You should be able to just move the trap down correspondingly I would think.

is 18" minimum above the trap the code I need to be working off of?

*UPC code states the trap is a minimum 6" above the floor.
Minimum riser length = 18"
Maximum riser length = 30"
Riser length is from the wier of the trap, to the receptacle opening.

Thanks and new problem. There is no trap, it runs right through the floor of the wall to under the house where it connects with the main in a crawlspace which heads into the ground.


Do I need a trap? House is 25 yrs old, always been this way and there has never been a smell.

If I remember correctly, if you followed the main line from the ground up to the house, this is the last drain that is connected to it, meaning it is at the end/termination of the main line so would it be protected by the other traps and vents ahead of it (shower, tub, etc)?

Possibly. Or your trap is right below the floor? Most times, untrapped drains will stink
