i am mounting a 98"x23" walnut slab about 2" thick. what is the best way to frame the support for the countertop to float across the 98" span? there are no cabinets or boxes underneath?

How important is the appearance? What kind of look are you going for? Wood?---Metal?

im doing the structure holding the counter out of 2x4's
i put a 2x4 ledger on back wall which 68". the right side of the counter (facing it) has a 24" wall to support that side. the left side wall is on a 45 degree angle but a ledger on that wall can support left side
the front of the counter (closest to you as you stand at a sink etc) is 98" wide
should i just build a 'box' out of 2x4's and block it in?
will a 2x4 support the front of the walnut slab?

Yep---a 2x4 has plenty of strength to hold up a counter and all the thing on top--

I picture this as a nice piece of wood, and can see how you can support it with no cabinets underneath... but why?

Now you say will be a sink mounted in it?
What will you do to cover the plumbing, what will the free space under it be used for?

Get us a sketch of the area and the size of the top---I'm a cabinet maker and there are others here with good skills and creative ideas---

You will get the most accurate suggestions if we know exactly what you are working with.

Also--what tools do you have for working wood?

it will need to rest on top and two 2x6 nailed together work much better than one single 4x6 for horizontal span purposes...

heres the walnut top. you can see the 4x6 stringer on front edge. it will get a walnut finish peice over it HOWEVR i wish there was a way to not have that there. but without it i think the middle may sag overvtime
ideas on a more hidden way?
i can move it in further perhaps. not sure how far

this was the plan, but it really takes away from the live edge of the tree. so i thought there were some alternatives. i removed the front ledger today and it is plenty supported. but i wonder if it will sag at the front over time. its 2.125" thick so not sure
looks alot better with nothing there. i dont mind the chrome plumbing.
