Can anyone tell me how the curvilinear forms that flow from the walls and into the ceilings that become archways or light shelves are created as pictured here?

I would imagine some sort of wood framing is involved, but how are those curves created to support plaster?

Strictly guessing but that kind of plaster work would not work in a wood house? Or the plaster will have to be isolated from the wood movements. It could be some synthetic finish that moves on carved foam block? There are plaster work of shaped ceilings and curved stairs, but that doesn't look old enough to be finished with the traditional materials.
