I have torn out the tiles and drywall on walls surrounding a tub/shower area. I found that the studs are not plumb and on plane, a requirement for installing cement backer board. My question is, how much variation is acceptable? There are three walls and a ceiling. The two end walls are about 33" wide and 68" high. The back wall is about 58" wide and 68" high. The back wall has a window in it, about 48" wide and 36" high. It is centered and the top is flush with the ceiling. For these widths and heights, about how much can you ignore? I am a complete novice, so please don't assume I know anything! Thank you.

Flat is good--plumb is less important--that might cause the corner cuts to vary in size but few people would notice that.

I usually sister in new 2x4s if there is room--from top plate to just below the rim of the tub.-tuck the 2x4 below the rim of the tub--pull it forward till it touches the tub flange and nail it in--use a straight edge at the top and do the same thing.----Flat wall----
