Hi guys,

I have an older condo (built in 1941) with a 200 sq. ft. porch that was added in the mid 1950's. The porch is built on a concrete slab and the current flooring is 9x9 VAT/VCT glued directly to the slab.

The current tiles are pretty grimy and many of them are coming loose from the slab, so I'd like to replace the whole floor with modern 12x12 vinyl tiles.

Since the tiles are probably asbestos, I really don't want to rip them out. Would it be possible to lay 1/4" plywood or other underlayment over the existing tiles, and then install the new tiles over this "new subfloor?"

If so, how would I ideally affix the plywood/underlayment to the existing floor?

Is there a better option?

Many thanks!
Sean

Not going to work.
Concidered anything but 12 X 12 tiles?
Laminate, floating Engineered flooring, vinyl strip?
All could be laid right over what you have now without removing it.

Thanks! I'm happy with vinyl strip as well but was hesitant since the cost was higher than 12x12 tiles.

Would I have to re-glue the existing tiles that are coming loose before installing vinyl strip overtop?

Thanks again!

May be faster and less mess to clean up the area and just stick down some cut down peel and stick tiles to level it out.
