Thinking about putting vinyl siding on my garage. It is 8" wood lap siding now. I have done siding before but it was on new construction. I would like to leave the wood siding on, put foam board it and then the vinyl. My question is what to do with the windows? They will be sunk in 1 1/2" or so. TIA

You would extend the frame out to the new siding plane. Just like installing jamb extensions on the interior to line up with the finished wall.

My house when I bought it had aluminum siding over top of the wooden clap board.
For the windows and the doors they formed a flashing for around the opening.
In much the same manner as is done when replacement windows are installed.

Why would you go through all that trouble for residing a garage?
Plus, it's your own home.

I would strip the old lap off, make sure you have a good water barrier and then install the vinyl.
Why not??

Will eliminate the window problem and the whole garage will look so much better! :yes:

I agree with all but putting vinyl on anything. It looks like garbage! It looks cheap and if not installed properly you can have a nasty looking outcome in a year or two. Put wood back up! Looks better and will maintain it's value in the long run.

On my garage the wooden clap forms the wall sheeting. If it were to be pulled off, all that would be left, would be bare studs.
In 1948 constructrion methods were not the same as now!
