Just looking for some opinions on this matter.
We are planning on vinyl siding the house and wonder if the painted cedar shakes should be removed before doing so or is it
ok to vinyl over them with an addition of a Leveling wall material.New windows will also be installed in this project. Pros and Cons etc...
Thanks in advance for any insights......

If you are also doing new windows, pull the old siding off and use new construction windows. This will allow you to properly seal everything and add new housewrap.

Also, by pulling off the old you can fully inspect the sheathing underneath and address any issues that may be uncovered. We once pulled cedar off of a house and a good majority of the window headers were hollow pieces of lumber thanks to carpenter ants.

I have seen a multitude of sins covered with vinyl. Looks great on the outside but isn't right.
