We are renovating my grandmothers old house from the 20's In the bathroom We have put down 1/4 inch plywood next we are going to put down 1/4 durock. The durock was suggested to protect the floors. We are putting vinyl laminate on top of it.

I know we put down thinset set the boards then fill in the seams. Any suggestions on getting it smooth for vinyl tiles?

I would not use crumble crap. The hardie product is far superior. I prefer to install it score side up and then level the nails , seams and score lines with a latex floor leveler when I am using it under vinyl.

¼" ply and then ¼" Durock? Why the heck do that? What king of ¼" ply? Be specific.

I wonder what's under all this?

Whoever made that suggestion should be shot, ignored, thrown into a wood chipper.
Pick one.

I'm gonna guess the subfloor is 1x4 or 1x6" (wish you'd provide the relevant info). Even if the subfloor is in perfect condition, ¼" ply is too thin, you need a structural layer, not that flimsy type. You need to remove this ply and also forget about the concrete backer.

4x4 sheets of ¼" ply suggests it's very smooth and made to install vinyl direct. But we shouldn't assume anything.
