If you read and follow the listing for a vent free unit you will have a small unit in a large room with a window open. No matter how clean it is supposed to be, you will be breathing the products of combustion. I recommend a vented unit.

Neither are a particularly good primary heat source (the vented sets send a lot of heat out the flue and the ventless sets will put a lot of CO2 and water vapor into the room). If it's just for aesthetics, either will work. If it's a backup heat source (again, for occasional use only) the ventless sets are more efficient.

Ventless sets are prohibited in bedrooms.
