Going to be doing some VCT 12x12 tiles in a room. Right now there is 3/4" plywood for the subfloor. Planning on putting down some 1/4" plywood for underlayment. Will be stapling it down with 1/4" crown staples. From what I've read I will need to fill the seams with a patching compound of some kind so they don't transfer to the tiles. What is best for this and is there a fast drying version? Does it just get spread over the seams or what is the trick to this? How long does it usually take to dry before you can spread the glue for the tiles out?

The people that do vinyl decking are always anal about smooth plywood and all the manufactures seem to have their own fast drying wood filler.

I have never used wood filler. A cementious based floor filler will work great and dries in a few minutes. It also spreads easier and smoother and requires very little sanding. Just apply with a wide drywall knife and scrape off the excess with the knife.
