Hi I have been getting some quotes for work that needs doing on my roof , do I need to get a workman who is VAT registered for my guarantee to be valid? I have been told that my guarantee would be invalid if the roofer went out of business and I didn't have a VAT receipt anyone help?

Since this is mainly a US based web site and there is not such thing that I know of in the US you would be better off getting some local ansewers to this question.
Adding your location to your profile would have told us this right off.

Or when someone from his area does see his post. They would explain it to him then. Because they would know what a VAT is. And wouldn't beat him up about his profile info or lack there of.

He is most likely from the UK.
VAT is their Value Added Tax (many other countries also have VAT)
In the UK, having a VAT receipt will sometimes help with warranty problems like he mentioned. Whether it does or not in the specific case of a roofer, I don't know.

For the OP, if I am correct about a UK location, you might try posting on a UK forum like DIYnot.com. One of the guys there would be more knowledgeable than us.

Or you might want to contact a solicitor.
