All,

First time poster. First time home owner. Hopefully I can use this site as a tool to help me with my renovations over the next few years.

I have a 1950s split level home in CT. The ground is clay and is generally well saturated. Over the years the freezing and thawing of the ground has warped the concrete slab tremendously. It also doesn't help that there is no steel mesh in the slab either...

I plan on removing the old slab and pouring a new one built to new standards. The space is approximately 600 sq ft. which includes a garage, a laundry room, and bedroom. This will happen after the exterior drainage system is completely re done.

Being a younger home owner, I would like to take care of the slab removal process myself being that's probably the only thing I can do on this job without royally screwing something up. Need to save $ where I can. My main concern is there is approx 215 sq. ft. of VAT tile and hot black mastic in the room adjacent to the garage where the slab is being demo'd. I haven't gotten it tested because its a waste of $20; home was built in '55, the 9x9 tile is original to the house, so it's certainly VAT.

I've been told that there can be big fines if I throw away concrete with VAT or hot mastic on it. One contractor told me I was going to have to spend thousands to abate it just to be able to throw it away! Just seems like a total waste of money, and my money tree doesn't grow that fast at this point in my life.

Looking for advice as to how to go about removing the concrete with the VAT tile on it..... Thanks.

You really need to check your local laws. In many areas a homeowner can remove and dispose of VAT materials without having to have permits or pay any special fees. It's only when you hire the workout that all of those requirements become a problem in many areas. I'm not sure about Connecticut but it certainly worth checking.
