Purchasing a home built in 1968 in Savannah GA. Crawl space is only about 2' off ground. Dirt but inspector advised very dry but recommended a moisture barrier.

Couple of questions.

I see many different materials such as silverback vs poly? What should be used?

How should it be installed? I get the overlap, but does it need to go up the foundation walls? If so how far?

Do I need to any ground uncovered. It has foundation vents to code supposed, do I need to close them.

Help on what I need to do to get the crawl space improved to the right condition for the long term.

orange, your last link didn't work for me...

Rundle, check with your local AHJ if you permanently close them off. eg.;

"R408.3 Unvented crawl space. Ventilation openings in under-floor spaces specified in Sections R408.1 and R408.2 shall not be required where:

1. Exposed earth is covered with a continuous Class I vapor retarder. Joints of the vapor retarder shall overlap by 6 inches (152 mm) and shall be sealed or taped. The edges of the vapor retarder shall extend at least 6 inches (152 mm) up the stem wall and shall be attached and sealed to the stem wall; and 2. One of the following is provided for the under-floor space: 2.1. Continuously operated mechanical exhaust ventilation at a rate equal to 1 cubic foot per minute (0.47 L/s) for each 50 square feet (4.7m2) of crawlspace floor area, including an air pathway to the common area (such as a duct or transfer grille), and perimeter walls insulated in accordance with Section N1102.2.9; 2.2. Conditioned air supply sized to deliver at a rate equal to 1 cubic foot per minute (0.47 L/s) for each 50 square feet (4.7 m2) of under-floor area, including a return air pathway to the common area (such as a duct or transfer grille), and perimeter walls insulated in accordance with Section N1102.2.9; 2.3. Plenum in existing structures complying with Section M1601.5, if under-floor space is used as a plenum."From: http://publicecodes.cyberregs.com/icod/irc/2009/icod_irc_2009_4_par111.htm
Always check to see if in a radon zone before covering; http://energy.cr.usgs.gov/radon/rnus.html

Gary,
Strangely it doesn't work for me either. When I was in the forum earlier, I did a search on
"moisture barrier crawl space" it gave me a result and a link. I recorded the link and posted it.

Perhaps the link is only good for me while I'm in "that current" session????

I just tried it for you, works now. We have been having trouble on our site today/tonight, it usually clears by itself. At least, "I know nothing" about that, lol.

P.S. Your first link did mention contact local AHJ, twice, which is good. I try to remember to suggest checking for radon areas when covering dirt with plastic; http://energy.cr.usgs.gov/radon/rnus.html

I didn't mention it because the OP wasn't in a "high" area, though a good idea to use them together for others in other locations. I add "termite" protection as well; leaving bare concrete/block for inspection area at top 3" on wall; http://termites101.org/termite-basics/termites-by-region

PS. Glad you are using the "search box", few do...

Yes it's working at the moment. I wonder if it will still be valid if you log off?
It may just be a temporary search for the life of your session.

I know that I posted the link that appeared with the search results???

I don't understand it myself. In the past, I have posted similar "search" results and it worked for a few days...., then didn't work. One of those mysteries...Que "weird music", lol.
