How can I upgrade my thermostat to a more advanced one ? Can I just remove the old one and install a new one or is there other things I need to take into consideration before switching ?

Follow the directions, mark the wires before you remove the old one, and also turn off the power to the hvac system before you even awap the thermostat out.
