I recently found out that the beautiful wood fence around my new house was never properly sealed or treated in any way. Apparently the previous owners had it installed weeks before putting the house on the market and never got around to working on it. I didn't even think to ask about it during the home buying process, and no one bothered mentioning it to me...

So after one Ohio winter I'm noticing discoloration along the whole length. I don't know exactly what it is, water damage or mold or what. Hopefully someone can figure that out from the photo. So how do I fix the problem? I ultimately want to stain the wood, so how do I get it ready for that?

Just my opinion. Looks to me like the natural weathering of the wood.

Me too - it's weathering to it's natural silvery grey color. It does not do so evenly - but in the end will be pretty even in color. Off-hand, I don't know a way to stop it once started - stain it maybe. However, then you have to keep up the re-staining every couple years. I always just let them go to their natural color.
