recently i have bought an old house and some of the paint was peeling
so i have scraped it, however it not all removed ( may be 10 % of surface scrapped )

now i have applied two coats of paint but still i see uneven surface
specially when some one looks carefully

can you suggest how to level or smooth the surface ( like spakle for sheet rock but this are wood jams )

also i have similar issue on exterior wood sidings
( known as aligatoring )

Picture would be nice.
99% of the time it should have been sanded to feather out the high areas or chemical stripped if it's really bad.

i was not aware how to load picture / this would have helped for sure
i am new to this forum and need to learn how to add pictures unless you have any suggestion !!

sanding will not work as too much work and tried using it
but not much productive - imagine 2000-2200 sq ft of surface sanding

chemical stripping - which one do you use ?
would it damage the wood ?? any side effects down the road ?
i assume this will need power washing after applying the chemicals ?

best wishes

how to apply ?

you add water to it ? works like sheet rock spackle ?

many thanks

yrecoup ( new jersey )
yes mix with water put on like spackle. outside of house you dont want to sand all that paint..one word..LEAD in the old paint..leave it alone if you cant do a proper hazmat clean up..cover it with vinyl siding or minimal scraping, and fill the uneven areas and paint..

there are many wood putty fillers available, some for interior and some for exterior....it should dry a few hours, but be guided by the instructions on the product you buy, most likely you should prime any raw wood before final paint coat, the putty is a light color and would be covered by any paint you use..cold , rain, sun should not effect the proper putty for exterior use...

thanks for the suggestion but as you know too many products in the market and it is really confusing, at times product don't perform what they are supposed to do and hence forum is really of great help to judge what right for you and would like to try something which has been tested by forum members
this is really blessing in disguise for new home owners like me who really like to work but sometime difficult to find the right products - donald dhuram water putty is first time i have heard / recommended even pros worked at my place but no one has any clue about it - once again thank you

also can you let me know how smooth the surface once you apply the putty ?
if rough then once i sand it, would it come out good ? imagine i am going to apply skin coat of this putty just to even out with old paint ( about 2-3 coat thick )

best wishes

ok read the complete label..it states it is good for exterior areas but needs to be painted, but if moisture can come from behind, paint may peel, such as a porch floor that has an outside crawl space were rain can run under, so siding should be fine, and putting it on large flat surfaces is not recommended..say you have a 1/8th inch deep by 1 to 2 inch area to flatten out this will work, to fill in hair line cracks that are as shallow, not so much..thats just the durham water putty..

I personally would just use regular joint compound inside...cheap and easy..the outside of the house with all that old paint is going to be a constant challenge, because the solid paint left on today can loosen up in a year and start peeling..its sorta an all or nothing deal...either have it professionally removed and cleaned up or cover over with a siding...I have watched many people battle that and usually end up with a professional strip job or siding after much greif and money patching it...

many thanks / really appreciated
what i am trying to achieve is flat surface by skim coating where i have scrapped the paint which was peeling off / so you can imagine layer of 2-3 coats of paint which comes off at random spots

i have used build up primer / from sherwin william but it is not really that thick

anyway, thought someone may have suggestion how to level ( also known as aligatoring in paint world )

once again , thank you
