Any opinions on what provides better protection..the synthet stuff or that tar/felt stuff? Sure it depends the type of both but generally speaking. Thanks

If it's for roofing what's your local building codes call for.
In your area no matter what they say I'd be using Storm and Ice Shield up the house envolope to help damage from ice dams.
