What are you underlaying? Flooring? Roofing? Siding?

If it's for roofing what's your local building codes call for.
In your area no matter what they say I'd be using Storm and Ice Shield up the house envolope to help damage from ice dams.

Synthetic is a little nicer to work with, neither makes any difference once the shingles are installed.
