I had a kitchen door replaced a couple of years ago and recently decided I wanted to get a storm door for it and was wanting to tackle the job myself. I printed the sizing chart from Home Depot and per my measurements, my opening does not fit the common sizes in terms of the width. The sill doesn't come out all the way, so I included 2 different measurements. The width looks like it got cut off but its:

Top: 35-5/8"
Middle: 35-13/16"
Bottom: 35-5/8"

Can I get a 34" door and try to build it up to make it fit by adding a 1x1 or or will that not work?

Pics added for reference.

Yes you could build it out. I would pad both sides out equally if you go that route. It will be a bit funky that way, as the build out will be visible from both the inside and outside. Maybe this is a side door or something. Otherwise you could maybe change the trim. doesn't look easy with the stucco. Or even cut it in place, though that would not be easy.

Did I not do it right?

Yes, this is a side door coming out of the kitchen. How it would look if I built it up was a concern of mine but, I wouldn't need build it up too much for a 34" door to fit. Then again, I've never done this so I wouldn't know.

I haven't done it for 30 years. Your pictures were not showing for me earlier.

It looks like your door is set back in the stucco, maybe you could just add another one inch stock and still use a 36" door. As long as the very outside measurements fits inside the stucco.

I would not build it out. Built out the closer bracket and latch striker will need to be built out and the primary door handle will be too close to the storm door z-bar. After you scrape your wrist a few times using the door knob you will be tired of it. If you go to a decent supplier(storm doors and window supplier or most siding suppliers) they can order a custom sized door that will fit perfectly for not much more money than a good quality box store storm door.

Thanks guys for the replies. After realizing that I was just barely off the minimum mark for a 36” door, I figured I’d trim back the “brickmould” to bring the smaller sides to the minimum 35-3/4” using an oscillating tool. That and a custom sized door in the model I wanted was double the price, so that wasn’t happening. In the end, I think it came out fine.

Not sure why the pic got uploaded sideways :plain:
