I'm installing a new pendant light to replace an existing light in my kitchen. The new lamp has only one wire - with two copper ends. One side is ridged and the other smooth. The directions say to connect the white wire in the lamp to the black wire in the receptacle, etc. How can I determine which is "white" and which is black?

the ridged wire is the neutral (white) wire

Run an incand. lamp from a known good ground to the short receptacle slot. If this doesn't light the lamp then the receptacle is wired incorrectly.
Don't use a neon tester to do this.
