So my friend who measured for our new windows said these(in pic) are two separate windows side by side. Does that mean there's some sort of framing member between them? What would that be?

Also I guess we have the choice of going with one big window or two separate windows as a replacement. Obviously if a double hung that couldn't be one big window. Thanks.

It could be two windows, but if so, they are usually joined by metal strips across the top and bottom to make "one" window unit of them. Most likely no framing between the two, although it would be ideal.

I have removed the center mullion in windows like that and installed one big window. Carefully pry the trim from the inside and see if there are supporting studs in the center, I doubt it. Making it one opening will probably exceed tooling limits for a double hung window. You could use a slider, picture, casement, bow or combinations.

Remove the trim inside if there are studs between then you want to know if it has one header or two, if you have one header 5 feet or longer, it should have 2 jacks under each end of a single.

Makes sense.

I agree with WOW, the lack of any type of header, indicates to me there MUST be some sort of mid support, as that is quite a load to be borne by just a window frame.

There's probably 2 or 3 studs there. Allows room for the nailing flanges of two separate windows. If it's one long header, you could get 2 windows mulled together, but that means it's heavier for you to install.
