So Sunday at my sons house he decided to switch directions and work on something that we did not have the lumber for....so ran out t o Lowes and grabbed twenty two bye four bye six. And we get them back and actually need an exact eight footer to start....so I try to fit one in place...and it won't go! So I measure, and get 96 1/4". Grab another and the same. Grab two more tapes and lay them all out on the third two bye.....and indeed 96 1/4" !! And the same with the rest of the stack! Expected for PT wood....but a regular stud??

Every piece of lumber I ever bought is .25-.5 inches longer than the stated dimension. Pre cuts excepted.

When you get up to the longer lengths, 12-16 footers, they can be up to an inch longer. Sometimes it comes in handy. Need an exact 8' er, that's why they make saws.

I should have read my post over! They were 2x6x8' .again today from a different lowes, 18 2 X4x8' for a habitat project, every one exactly 96 1/4" !! In the day, an 8' stud was 8' !!! Anyway, saving all of the quarter inch cut offs for the wood stove. Ron

They are left a bit long if the carpenter wants a perfectly square cut, they can true up the end to be perfect.


The mill cut is just a close proximity now.

I remember when you bought a 2x6 , you got a 2 x 6, now you get a 1.75x 5.75.


Such is the modern world, nothing is what it used to be.

We get 1-1/2 x 5-1/2" around here, .......... ha.......
