In my bathtub, the drain closer is a circular chrome ring with a chrome insert that has a knurled knob on top. You turn it a quarter turn to lower it or raise it. My question is how to get it out of the drain? I believe the plumber has a way of releasing it and lifting it right out, but I can't seem to do it.

No, I'm afraid not, but it's probably the most common kind in use. Small knurled knob to grab to operate it. It moves up and down about 1/2 inch, and rotates freely, in either direction.
